Visit of German Federal Foreign Minister Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Ethiopia (24.3.2014)

The first stop on Minister Steinmeier’s trip to Africa was Ethiopia. In Addis Ababa, he met with Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros, Prime Minister Hailemariam and Ethiopia’s President Dr. Mulatu Teshome as well as with AUC-Chairperson Dr. Dlamini-Zuma. He also visited the new premises which will, once finalized, house the AU’s Peace and Security Department and which are funded by the Federal Foreign Office.

At a reception at the residence of the German Ambassador, the Director of the DAAD Information Centre Addis Ababa, Dr. Gerald Heusing, thanked Dr. Steinmeier for the continuous and munificent financial support of the German Foreign Office to the DAAD and briefed him about the activities of the DAAD in Ethiopia. In 2012, the Foreign Office contributed 177.8 million Euro to DAAD´s budget which accounted for 44 per cent of its overall budget.

Dr. Steinmeier continued his Africa trip the following day and visited the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies in Dar es Salaam which is one of five centres established in Africa under the name “African Excellence – Fachzentren zur Eliteförderung”, funded by the DAAD and the German Foreign Office within the programme “Aktion Afrika”.
