18th Annual General Assembly of Association of Ethiopians Educated in Germany AEEG (16.2.2014)

Over sixty Alumni from various German Universities met on Sunday 16th February at the
Goethe Institute Addis Ababa. The Adama, Bahir Dar, Jimma and Hawassa branches of AEEG were attendant. Four papers on the following crosscutting topics were presented:

  • Highway Design Under Consideration of Economy and Environment (Prof. Alemayehu Gebissa, University of Rostock),
  • The Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation: Connecting Academic Excellence Worldwide (Prof. Tsige Gebremariam, Addis Ababa University),
  • Wind Energy (Dr.-Ing. Abebayehu Assefa, Addis Ababa University)
  • E-learning and Healthcare in Developing Countries (Dr. Berhanu Beyene, University of Hamburg).

The event marked also the successful closing of a project on Sustainable Solid Waste Management: Composting of Local Organic Waste in Addis Ababa implemented by AEEG through technical and financial support by Boku University and Center for Development Research (CDR) from Austria. Project achievements through the past three years include:

  • Networking on a multi stakeholder approach with government and non-government organizations,
  • Compost production from organic household waste,
  • Trainings on source separated waste collection at household level,
  • Compost quality analysis, sampling procedures and compost monitoring as well as
  • Urban agriculture and compost application at schools in Kolfe Keranyo sub city of Addis Ababa.

Guests included Mr. Patrick Wegner (First Secretary for Economic and Cultural Affairs at the German Embassy), Dr. Gerald Heusing (IC Addis Ababa), and a delegation from Austria led by Mr. Roland Linzner, Boku University.
